So why is building an email list a good idea? There are many reasons, but these five are probably the most important:

1) Building a list allows you to reduce the cost of acquiring new customers. No matter what you might think, it’s much, much cheaper to pre-qualify and pitch to one person until they buy than it is to pitch to different people until one of them buys.

2) Building a list allows you to maximize the profit that you generate per customer.

3) Having a list means that you can participate in major launch events. Next time there’s a big launch, you can benefit by being one of the first affiliates to offer the product.

4) Having a list allows you to test your copy. With a captive audience, you can run controlled experiments to test your copy’s conversion rate before you pay to send the same advertisement out to a larger audience.

5) Having a list allows you to bring more to the table in future joint venture partnerships. Rather than simply offering to do part of the product-creation work, you can now offer to market the completed product to your list.

For these five reasons and many, many others, list building is one of the most profitable things you can do as an Internet marketer. Not only will it help you to monetize your current sites better, but it will also open up new avenues for partnership and marketing.

I may have touched on this a time or two briefly; but it’s worth repeating.

In fact it deserves a prominent place at the forefront of your mind.

No matter how good you look, no matter how talented you are at what you do, no matter how well you can articulate your message, if you don’t have a list, you don’t have much of anything.

Rarely will somebody buy from you right off the rip, unless they’ve already been primed and they’re ready to make a decision.  It’s kinda like meeting somebody at a party and asking them to marry you.  There’s a process.  First you’ve gotta introduce yourself, maybe go out on a date or two, develop a relationship and then see what happens.

Outside of a few exceptions, people have to know, like and trust you before they’re gonna hand over their hard earned money.  There’s WAY too many scams out there to expect people to be so readily accessible in the financial arena, if you know what I mean.

Developing the skills to “convert sales”, and “close deals” are important no doubt; but understanding basic long term marketing strategies, how to target specific demographics within the framework of an ongoing campaign, that’s where the rubber meets the road.

You don’t want to seem needy; but you do want to show a certain level of respect.  You do this by building a list of qualified leads.  It takes time for most people to make a decision; but when they do, it’s usually immediate if they trust you.

For instance, what if your utility company called you once in a while and gave you something of value?  What if you regularly received free information about other services that saved you money?  If they had an up-sell, you’d more than likely be okay with it, given that it wasn’t too outrageous.

Having a list gives you the opportunity to prove yourself to potential clients.  You’re not just sending sales videos, you’re entertaining them, informing them, showing them how much you appreciate who they are.  It goes a long way in gaining trust.

If you aren’t working on list retainment now, down the road, you’re gonna regret it.  Start today, don’t make the same mistake so many other successful people have made.
